Useful Tips For Beginning Skiers

Author: If you have never been out snow skiing before it can be a little intimidating. If you are not sure how to snow ski, one thing that you can do is take some beginning lessons, but you can also follow these useful tips to help make your first trip out to the slopes a successful one.
The first thing that you need to think about as a beginning skier is whether you want to rent your equipment or purchase it. Most people recommend renting your ski equipment the first few times that you go out because you don’t know how well you will like it. If it turns out that you love snow skiing and you are a natural at it, then you can go buy some good ski equipment, but until then it wouldn’t be good investment.
Not only do you need to have the proper equipment you will also want to wear the proper clothes. When snow skiing you will want to wear some ski bibs, a ski jacket and gloves, the ski bibs and ski jacket need to go over your original layer of warm clothing, two pairs of socks are also good to cushion your feet and keep them warm. A ski mask can also come in handy, as do ski goggles.
Something else that you need to learn to do is sideslip your skis; this will even come in handy as an advanced skier. Learning how to sideslip your skis is important because it will allow you to get down steep grades without falling. To sideslip your skis you will need to turn your skis so that they are perpendicular to the hill.
You want to put your arms out in front of you, mainly for balance, and you are going to want to put all of your weight on the instep of your boot that is closest to the bottom of the hill. With your weight placed properly you are going to want to roll your feet and ankles down the hill, your skis should be sliding downhill, but still remaining perpendicular to the hill. When you want to stop all you have to do is dig the edge of your ski into the snow and shift your weight to the inside foot.
Another useful tip is learning how to control your speed and how to stop on the skis. The key to controlling how fast you are going is how far your skis are wedged apart, the bigger your wedge the slower you go, you will eventually stop if you make the wedge big enough. By keeping your skis parallel to each other, you will pick up speed the fastest, but you can always slow yourself down by using the wedge.

Chamonix Mont-Blanc: Situated in the French Alps, it played host to the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924. It lies at the foot of Mont-Blanc, the highest peak in the Alps. It is renowned for its vertical drop of 9,209 feet and for having one of the world’s longest runs, the Vallee Blance, at 13.7 miles.
Banff/Lake Louise: This ski resort in Alberta, Canada is located in the Banff National Park. It is one of the most scenic mountain resorts in North America and has very reliable snow conditions. Covering 4,200 acres it offers tree-lined runs, smooth slopes and plunging bowls, providing ideal skiing for everyone from the novice to the expert.

Kitzbuhel: The most famous resort in the Austrian Tyrol. Skiing began here in 1892 and the 700-year old village still retains its traditional charm. Kitzbuhel is home to the Hahnenkahm the most dangerous and famous of the downhill ski races and is Austria’s winter entertainment capital. It has excellent skiing and snowboarding, but due to its low altitude snow may be lacking on the lower slopes.
Whistler/Blackcomb: This resort in British Columbia provides the best skiing in North America with the biggest vertical drop. It has 8,171 acres of skiable terrain and has been voted North America’s Favourite Ski Resort by OntheSnow.com visitors. The village has cafes, spas, galleries, international stores and over 100 restaurants that feature cuisines from around the world including French, Chinese, Italian, Mexican and more.

Basic Skiing Overview
Snow can be the best plaything on Earth. One can have a snow ball fight and make a snow man with it. One can spend a chilly Sunday afternoon sledding down it until it is nothing but muddy mush and the snow clothes need cleaning. One can use it for a home like the Eskimos and polar bears do. One can snow ski on it, either for recreational purposes or for a professional competition. Regardless of what one is skiing for, it is always fun, until someone misses getting off of the chair lift! Watch out for that skier, it is a sign that they are a beginner and will run into you, if you are in their way.
In order to ski, one needs the right equipment. No one should be skiing in shorts and a tank top, but it has been done (and not well). If you are a beginner, you will be falling a lot, and mostly on your rear. Strapping a pillow to it will not help because it will just throw your balance off. So, get some warm, cushioned snow bibs, or a snow outfit, a nice warm jacket, woolen socks, because the electric ones do not really work all that well especially when they get wet, gloves, hat, ski boots, and skis and hit the slopes, preferably the bunny hill.
The bunny hill is the hill where people learn to ski. There will be ski instructors there with classes made up of kids who are in 1st grade to grandparents who have never skied in their lives. This is the best place for a beginner to be because it is a gentle slope with minimal trees and a very slow ski speed. Here, the beginner will be taught to ski by using the “snow plow” technique. This is where the skier begins moving and has their feet in a V shape. When they want to go faster, they move their legs a little closer together. When they want to stop, they push the V out farther. This gets them ready for the next stage of skiing, the green hill.
The green hill is still for beginners, but also for novice skiers. Not too many instructors will take their classes here because skiers are working on getting the techniques of starting and stopping down, taking a chance on how fast they can go, and gaining confidence. There may be a few more trees to line the green hill or runs, but they are not in the way of the skier. They are more of a natural fence than anything else.
The blue runs are for advanced skiers. Novice skiers should not try these runs until they are skiing down the green runs without stopping, falling, or feeling afraid. The blue runs contain steeper slopes which allow the skier to “slice” down the mountain instead of using the “snow plow” technique. There may be moguls which are bumps in the snow that a skier can either ski over or ski around, but these can throw a skier off balance and into the snow, if they are not careful. The moguls here are usually visible, to give the skier time to decide what they want to do to get over the mogul.
The black diamond and double black diamond runs are the hardest runs. They contain moguls, a steep slope, sharp turns, and other obstacles that an expert skier would know how to negotiate. The thing to remember about skiing is to never leave the trail. It could kill you.

When I started skiing I was daunted by the variety of types of different ski activities and was afraid to ask. Here is a brief introduction to the different types of skiing that are out there.
Skiing is not just about hammering down the slopes in the fastest time possible. Alpine freestyle focuses on finesse and performing tricks on the slopes. It has been referred to as acrobatics on skis. Skiers use jumps and rails to perform aerial tricks that are similar to those performed in urban areas on skateboards.
Cross country or Nordic Skiing is a type of skiing that is performed worldwide. It is probably the most prevalent form of skiing as it does not require a special ski area, it can therefore be performed anywhere that has snow. Cross country skis are long and thin to help distribute the weight of the skier. Cross country skiers often use their ski poles to propel themselves along as well pushing the skis sideways in a technique similar to ice skating.
People off on their ski holidays may be presented with the opportunity to attempt ski jumping. Ski jumping or Nordic jumping is a competitive sport that involves the skier travelling down a specially constructed ski ramp and off a jump at the end in an attempt to achieve a further distance than the competitors. The ski jumper uses specially designed skis that are wider and longer than normal skis.
Off-Piste or Randonee skiing is when a skier leaves the marked runs or Pistes in search of freshly dropped snow. It is an activity that is done by advanced skiers. This is because the skier is never fully aware of the types of terrain they will face and have to be competent enough to deal with an enormous variety of situations. The skier may travel to areas that are prone to avalanches and as a result the practice is banned at many US ski resorts. It is legal everywhere but ski resorts will offer advice on where to avoid. It is strongly recommended that you adhere to this advice.
Telemark skiing utilises flexible ski boots that do are not attached to the skis at the heel. Named after the Telemark region of Norway and dates back to 1868 when the father of modern skiing Sandre Norheim used this type of binding when he competed in a ski jump competition. Since then alpine ski fittings have gradually replaced the telemark system as the telemark skis are better suited to rolling terrain than the steeper downhill runs. Telemark skiing is physically more demanding than Alpine skiing.
As well as being a recreational activity for civilians, skiing is also utilised as a training activity for the military. Warfare has also taken place on skis and ski troops have played a key role in military activity. Records were made of ski warfare as early as the thirteenth century. More recently ski troops helped Finland remain independent from Russia during the Winter War. They also helped repel the German forces during the Lapland War.
